Can Chiropractic Help With Headaches?
Did you know that in the U.S., nine out of ten people suffer from headaches? Not only are they painful, but they are also irritating and can keep us from living your best life each day.
Headaches can be triggered by numerous things including tension and stress. Tension headaches are dull pain, tightness, or pressure around your forehead or the back of your head and neck. They are the most common headaches for adults. They typically last for 30 minutes up to a few days. Some side effects are trouble sleeping, irritability, muscle aches, and trouble focusing. Headaches can also be caused by certain foods we eat and by toxins in the environment.
Our posture can also play an enormous role in the cause of our headaches, especially among teenagers and young adults. Teenagers are spending more and more time on their electronics, which is leading to very poor posture. When they are constantly looking down at their phone, the angle of their head puts additional strain on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the neck and can cause tension headaches. Teens’ shoulders are also curving forward which is causing them to slouch while adding additional strain on their neck, back, and upper spine. For each inch our neck bends forward over the neutral position, we are creating an extra 10lbs. of pressure on our bodies! Our poor posture leads to shortening of some muscles and irritation of our spine and the discs. This shortening will cause a rubber band feeling on our heads causing tension headaches.
According to the American Chiropractic Association, we are all engaging in more sedentary activities than we used to and more and more hours are being spent in one fixed position staring at computer screens and our phones. This causes severe muscle tension in the neck and back, resulting in what can be a dull pain, throbbing pain, or sharp stabbing pains in the head that can radiate to other parts of the body. Instead of waiting the pain out or taking harmful medication in hopes of stopping the headache, chiropractic is a very effective way of getting rid of your headaches.
Many medications that are used to treat the symptoms and pains of a headache have very harmful side effects that can be avoided all together with chiropractic. Many unwanted side effects can be as common as nausea and a rash or as extreme as gastrointestinal bleeding or changes in liver function. The overuse of medicine is equally as dangerous. As each dose of medicine wears off, the pain comes back, leading you to take even more. This overuse causes your medicine to stop helping your pain and actually start causing headaches.
Instead, gentle chiropractic adjustments alleviate stress on the system and improve overall body function. Chiropractors say that these adjustments reduce joint restrictions or misalignments in the spine and other joints in the body. By reducing restriction in the spine, inflammation is also reduced allowing for overall healthier movement and increased function in the entire body. By increasing joint mobility and improving your nervous system function and spinal health, your body has the ability to better manage the pain caused by migraines and tension headaches.
Chiropractic is a safe, gentle, effective treatment and a great way to get rid of and manage headaches for people of all ages. It helps your body bring upon a natural recovery which is beneficial for your body as you get older. Since chiropractic is such a safe treatment, it is a great option for babies, children, the elderly, and any age in between. It is one of the most effective forms of treatment due to the absence of surgery or side-effects.
Chiropractic is also safer for children and babies rather than having to give them prescribed medications and antibiotics that can end up being very harmful for them. Gentle chiropractic manipulations can help to align a baby’s or child’s spine and improve their overall posture, which may help prevent tension headaches from the start.
Wouldn’t it be great to be pain free, feel relaxed, and be able to move our bodies freely in all directions without it hurting and causing headaches? Chiropractic is the answer we’re all looking for!
